Inflammation in ceramic scaffolds boost bone regeneration

In their bid to design new bio-materials that promote tissue regeneration, scientists have identified how inflammation, when precisely controlled, is crucial for bone repair.

The findings showed that a new type of ceramic scaffold causes inflammatory cells to behave in a way that is more regenerative than scaffolds that are currently used clinically.
The reason can be attributed to macrophages — swallowing white blood cells that digest foreign particles, the researchers said.

“We wanted to know why these scaffolds were successful and to understand the contributions of macrophages to that process,” said Kara Spiller, Associate Professor Drexel University, in Pennsylvania, the US.

The findings showed that the new ceramic scaffolds caused macrophages to transform into an M2c phenotype, meaning they express genes associated with re-modelling.

This behaviour was not seen in the scaffolds that have been approved to be used in humans.

Further, the study also found that macrophages must be in direct contact with the scaffold in order to regenerate tissue.

“The macrophages degrade the scaffolds and shape them into something new,” Spiller said.

Determining why certain scaffolds are successful in re-growing bone will ultimately help biomedical engineers design other types of scaffolds and new drug delivery strategies to promote healing in other areas of the body, the researchers concluded in the paper published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

FiveAI will compete against Google, Tesla in driverless car sector

It seems that Google and Tesla have a new competitor in their driverless car projects — FiveAI, a Britain-based startup that is working on a technology that is data light and fully autonomous.

The startup, with Amadeus Capital — the venture capital company leading the investment — has secured $2.7 million in equity funding to help develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of driving a car, Forbes reported on Sunday.

The startup’s concept is different from Google and Tesla as FiveAI’s project would have a vehicle fitted out with sensors all processed by a central computer capable of “machine learning”, that is, capability of picking up information from encounters and applying it to future situations.

It uses sensors to perceive what is out there — identifying things like road, pavement, street signs, pedestrians and other cars, Forbes quoted Steve Allpress, Chief Technology Officer at FiveAI, as saying.

It builds up a probablisitic picture of what is likely to happen that can see how our own actions and (others’) actions will influence possible options in order to then plan the safest route, Allpress said.

While Tesla’s autopilot feature does not provide full autonomy, meaning, it is a driving aid that requires a human to be in charge at all times, Google’s system does not require human oversight but it is very data heavy.

Google has created a detailed point cloud with millions of data points on each road in order to build a 3D picture of how it looks without anyone in it. It can then subtract that out to know what the system is currently seeing, Allpress noted.

Invariably humans do not always pay attention when they should. We want to get to the point where you can de-couple the human from the vehicle, Allpress added.

Newegg discounts Nexus 6P for end of July sale

Following the lead of Google, has discounted the Nexus 6P as part of its ongoing end of July sale.

The PC parts megastore has discounted both the 32GB and 64GB variants of Google’s 2015 flagship, though only the gold version of the phone is on sale currently. Due to what looks like a pricing error, the 64GB Nexus 6P is actually cheaper than the 32GB one. It’s currently priced at $449, compared to the 32GB version, which is $499.

Those that want to purchase the silver or graphite black Nexus 6P can still get at it a discount by visiting the Google Store. Note, however, that Google has only discounted the device by $100. In either case, both companies are probably trying to clear out stock before the new set of Nexus devices get announced at the end of the summer.

To sweeten the deal, Newegg is throwing in three free items when customers buy the Nexus 6P: a Newegg gift card, clear case and selfie stick. Put together, the three gifts are worth $50.

Report: New Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch will be unveiled very soon

If you’re in the market for a new smartwatch, you might want to put your wallet away and wait just a little longer.

Samsung is reportedly planning to announce the Gear S3, the successor to the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic the company launched last year.

According SamMobile, the Gear S3 will retain the Gear S2’s round display and rotating bezel. The watch itself will likely receive a design revamp, although it may simply be slimmer and more streamlined.

Not that there would be anything wrong with that. The Gear S2, as Mashable chief correspondent Lance Ulanoff said in his review, is the best round smartwatch on the market and possibly the best non-Apple Watch smartwatch available.

The Gear S3 will reportedly retain the Gear S2’s round display and rotating bezel.

The Tizen-powered smartwatch is comfortable and the rotating bezel makes navigation a breeze.

Samsung is set to announce its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, at its Unpacked event on Aug. 2.

Last year, the company teased the Gear S2 at the Note 5/S6 Edge+ Unpacked launch event and then formally unveiled it a few weeks later at IFA.

It’s very possible Samsung will go with the same approach. IFA begins on Sept. 2 and runs through Sept. 7.

Google Maps adds multi-stop feature to iOS version

 Already available on the Android version of Google Maps, multi-stop directions is now a feature for those using the app on an iOS device. With this feature, iOS users are now just a tap away from receiving directions to multiple destinations. Once you enter a location, you can add additional stops by clicking on “Add stop” in the corner. And you can change the order of your trip by customizing the order of the destinations on your list.

When you’ve finished adding all of the destinations, click on “Done” and you will experience the usual smooth navigation from the first stop on your list all the way to the last. While we are still in the midst of the summer driving season, this feature definitely comes in handy and certainly saves you time.

Instead of having to stop and re-enter the next address each time you complete one leg of your journey, all you do is enter all of the addresses before you start out on the road. Make sure that the order of each stop is exactly where you want it, and start navigating.
