‘Most Advanced Humanoid Robot’ Has Scarily Impressive Facial Expressions

A humanoid robot has gone viral for its incredibly detailed facial expressions.
Engineered Arts has unveiled its Ameca robot on YouTube and it certainly looks like something out of a science fiction film.
The video shows the machine warm up its shoulder before a click causes its eyes to open and express a genuine look of shock or surprise.
It has a furrowed brow, it blinks multiple times (even though it doesn’t need to) and observes its machine arm with an intense and curious gaze.
The short clip ends with Ameca reaching out its hand and forming a slight smile as it stares into your soul.
It’s undeniably impressive; there’s no other word for it.
Predecessors of humanoid robots have done well to mimic human facial expressions however they have tended to look a little awkward and…well, robotic.
However, Ameca’s smooth transitions between various emotions as well as near-perfect human-looking face shows why its Engineered Arts’ ‘most advanced humanoid robot’.
People on YouTube were both shocked amazed at how realistic and human-like the machine is.https://player.vimeo.com/video/652071809?h=b81d234e6f
One user wrote: “I know we’re supposed to be scared of AI, but this is the first gynoid that hasn’t creeped me out. It’s pretty cool.”
Another said: “It’s the eyes. People take for granted how important eyes are when it comes to something looking alive. The rapid movement, the focus, the blinking, the attention they seem to pay to whatever is grabbing their attention.”
A third added: “I seriously thought this was CGI at first. Great work! The hands look really well done too.”Related video:
Some people compared Ameca to the NS-5 series from I, Robot with Will Smith. To be fair, apart from the robots in that movie having a glass-like face, they’re pretty indistinguishable.
The big challenge will be getting these robots to be able to walk around on their own battery power and Engineered Arts says they’re a long way off from that.
The face is housed on a ‘human-like artificial body (AI x AB)’ that boasts a ‘powerful Tritium robot operating system’.
Engineered Arts hopes their design will be the way of the future because it ‘represents the forefront of human-robotics technology’.
“Designed specifically as a platform for development into future robotics technologies, Ameca is the perfect humanoid robot platform for human-robot interaction,” the company says on its website.
“We focus on bringing you innovative technologies, which are reliable, modular, upgradable and easy to develop upon.”
People say it is just like Sonny from I, Robot.
